What is Natyashastra?

Natyashastra is a 2,000-year-old Sanskrit text on the theory and practice of theatre, dance and the arts. It offers a sophisticated framework for understanding emotion through the concept of rasa (flavour, essence) and bhava (emotional state).

In this workshop, participants explore how performers use specific physical, vocal and gestural techniques to embody and communicate emotion. These techniques have direct application in facilitation, teaching, communication and self-awareness.

Workshop Structure (Customisable)

  • Opening: Introduction to Natyashastra and rasa theory
  • Embodiment: Practical exploration of bhavas and rasas through movement and voice
  • Application: How to use these tools in your own work and life
  • Integration: Reflection, Q&A and planning next steps
